15. The Question
I went and visited Bessie and brought along some of her favorite chocolate candies. I missed having her as a neighbor next door; I missed taking Bitsy on walks. Her old apartment was in the process of getting renovated from the fire that had taken place in the kitchen, and I wasn’t looking forward to finding out who was eventually taking her place as my new neighbor. After all, it was probably going to be someone younger and loud, or maybe someone who wouldn’t be as friendly. But oh well; I had no choice but to stay there and see who it was. I figured if the new neighbors ended up being too bad that I would just find a new place to move. No big deal.
Bessie smiled as I sat down in the seat next to her. “Man, I’ve missed you,” she said, saying the exact words that I was thinking about her.
“I really miss you too, Bessie. Do you like it here?”
“No,” she said flatly. “I don’t like it here. I want to be back where you are.”
“I know,” I said, giving her a downturned smile. “But I think these places are great. You have a lot of people here you can make friends with.”
“You’re my friend. I want you to be next to me.”
“Well if I qualified to live here I would do it in a heartbeat. But sometimes we have to just work with what we’ve got, right?”
“Yeah, I guess,” she shrugged. “But I don’t like it. I don’t like this one bit, and I’m going to make it known to everyone around here.”
I placed my hand on her shoulder. “Oh, come on. Don’t be one of those.”
“One of those what?” she snipped back.
“Do you want me to be honest with you?” I asked with a smile.
She readjusted her bifocal glasses that were sitting a little crooked on her face. “Yes.”
“Okay. Don’t be one of those old bitties who makes everyone else’s life miserable just because they are.”
At first she seemed appalled that I was being so forward with her. But then her mouth melted from the straight set line it was in and formed into a smile. “Well, alright,” she gave in. “I guess I’ll listen to you. But only because it’s you and I don’t want you to hear from anyone that I’ve been misbehaving.” She sat back in her chair and wiggled into a more comfortable position while reaching into the bag of chocolates, wasting no time unwrapping one of them. Bitsy, who was currently curled up by her feet, took note of the sound and sat up, giving the candy her full attention. “So what’s new with you?” she asked before popping it into her mouth.
“Well I guess there’s no harm in telling you that I met someone.”
Her eyes glistened behind her glasses. “You did? Who?”
“His name is Dillan. He’s the guy who came with me when Bitsy got out, remember?”
“Oh, yes I remember him. I’m sorry, I was so upset about Bitsy that I didn’t even say hello when he stepped inside.
